It’s Your Day, Remember It the Right Way

Photographs freeze the day. Film keeps it moving. It keeps your dad’s voice cracking in the middle of his toast, the exact way your partner exhaled when the doors opened, the noise the room made when you walked back down the aisle. That’s the part people forget fastest, and it’s the part Kota Video Productions is built to protect.

Dakotah Douglas has been filming weddings across San Diego County for ten years, from Carlsbad. Collections start at $1,800, and The Knot lists a 5.0 rating from ten reviews.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far ahead should we book?

Peak San Diego dates from May through October go early. Twelve months out is normal for a Saturday in that window.

Do we get the raw footage?

Ask. It’s handled per collection rather than hidden in a contract, and you’ll get a straight answer before you sign.

How long until we see the film?

Turnaround depends on our teams workload but normally takes 6-8 weeks from the wedding date to complete the final cuts. We can provide social reels earlier so you have something to share while the main edit is finished.

Can you work alongside our photo team?

Yes, and Kota shoots stills in-house too if you’d rather have one team covering both. See wedding photography in San Diego.

Is one videographer enough?

For a single-venue wedding under about 120 guests, usually. For two locations, a large guest list, or any moment where you want the aisle and the faces watching it at the same time, a second operator is recommended.

What about audio?

Wireless lavalier microphones on the officiant and the couple, plus a feed from the venue’s system where one exists. Vows recorded from three feet away sound different to vows recorded from the back row, and it’s the single most noticeable quality difference between a good wedding film and a cheap one.

What you actually receive

Every collection is built around a highlight film of roughly seven to fifteen minutes, which is longer than the three-to-five-minute standard most studios deliver. Zola’s guidance puts typical highlight films under ten minutes and documentary edits at thirty minutes or more, so this sits deliberately in between: long enough to hold a story, short enough that people finish it.

Alongside it you get two Instagram-formatted reels, a full ceremony and speech recording so nothing is paraphrased, and an hour-length feature edit on the larger collections. Drone coverage is included where airspace and venue rules allow. Guest video messages are available when you want the people who came to be in the film rather than behind it.

Three collections

Your Story - up to ten hours, two videographers. Two cameras means the aisle and the faces watching you walk it, at the same time. Includes guest interviews and drone.

Wedding Film - up to ten hours, one videographer. Same deliverable list, single-shooter coverage.

Micro - up to five hours, one videographer, a three-to-eight-minute highlight film plus the full ceremony. Built for elopements, courthouse mornings and forty-person backyard weddings.

Pricing can be customised. If a collection is close but not right, say so and it gets adjusted rather than sold to you as-is.

How San Diego light actually behaves

Anyone can promise golden hour. Fewer vendors will tell you when you won’t get it.May Gray and June Gloom are real and they are not a rumour. A marine layer forms when warm, moist air sits over cool coastal water and a temperature inversion traps it, which is why the coast can stay flat and grey until early afternoon while inland venues cleared hours earlier. Late spring and early summer coastal ceremonies need a timeline that assumes soft, even light rather than dramatic sun, and a videographer who knows how to light for it instead of praying it burns off.

That knowledge changes practical decisions: when to schedule your first look, whether the drone launches before or after the ceremony, and how much time to hold back for portraits after the reception starts.

Permits, drones and the things that go wrong quietly

Film permits are exactly what ruins a shot list at 4pm. The City of San Diego asks for filming requests at least three full business days ahead, with beach and park requests going through Parks & Recreation. California State Parks handles Torrey Pines, Cardiff, San Elijo and most of the Carlsbad coastline on a separate four-business-day timeline, and drone work there is automatically classed as a complex shoot.

Kota flies under FAA Part 107 and pulls LAANC authorisation where controlled airspace requires it. If your venue won’t allow a drone, you’ll be told at booking.

Where Kota films

Coronado and the Hotel del. Balboa Park and its museums. Liberty Station in Point Loma. La Jolla’s coastline. Downtown and the Gaslamp. North County resorts in Carlsbad and Encinitas. Inland ranch venues toward Ramona and Fallbrook. Riverside and Orange County are standard; destination weddings quoted on request.
